"Aydanes are a race of tiny sapients once thought to be pests, during which time they were exterminated by the trillions. Since the discovery of their intellect, however, they have been allowed passage on ships, and are constructing their own now as well."
— Vacotor Database, Terran translation

The Aydanes (pronounced /eɪ.deɪn/) are a race of tiny sapients which have, until recently, possessed no known technologies and instead simply boarded a group of vessels that had come to survey their homeworld, allowing them to pass between numerous worlds and ships in a manner similar to how rats were spread across the planet Earth. Once thought to be pests, they were set upon by the various sapient races (and the occasional non-sapient beast) in an attempt to eradicate them from the worlds and ships they were believed to have "infested". During this time they were exterminated by the trillions. Eventually, however, a group of scientists seeking to find out the best way to exterminate the species discovered their large cerebral cortex, and decided to perform various tests to hammer out a hypothesis as to why the brain might be so large—it was this which led to the discovery for the galaxy as a whole of the Aydanes' intellect. It took little time for many sapients to pardon them from the genocide formerly performed upon them, and in seeking a way to show they meant no ill-harm to a fellow sapient race, the Galactic Council passed a measure allowing Aydanes passage on ships and across planetary surfaces—the same rights as normal species would have (although due to their small size and lack of technology, they did not have to own the vehicle and were essentially allowed to be "legal stowaways").

Even so, the Aydanes have now been witnessed on occasion constructing their own ships and other technologies as well, indicating that they are beginning to grasp the concept behind these tools and are beginning their upliftal.
